The Roxy Theatre opened in 1930 on 20th St. in Saskatoon. It was designed by F.F. LeMaistre and built by Nathan Rothshtein, both of Winnipeg and was done in the ‘atmosphere theatre’ style at the time. The theatre featured a Spanish Villa-style facade with oak doors, brass fittings, a 22 foot marquee and a large neon sign.

Decorative balconies, windows are set into the main theatre’s plaster walls which help make it look like an outdoor courtyard, complete with clouds and sky painted overhead with twinkling lights serving as stars. The main theatre has two areas, an upper and a lower with the entrance to the auditorium coming in midway.

The Roxy has a second, much smaller theatre which is a elongated ‘hallway’ for lack of better words. It is decorated minimally in an art-deco style.
The building was originally called the Roxy Theatre and prices were 40 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. The name has flip flopped over the years from the Roxy to the Coronet to the Towne Cinemas and back to the Roxy today. Run by the Magic Lantern Theatres/Rainbow Cinemas company, the theatre today serves as a 2nd run theatre. Movies that have already had their exhibition in mainstream theatres, play in the Roxy at a slightly reduced cost.
I first fell in love with the Roxy (then the Towne Cinemas) while in university. It was and is an amazing theatre to see a show in with its huge audience capacity and it’s unsurpassable atmosphere. Next time you’re looking for a place to see a movie, give the Roxy a try.

I think the Roxy is a beautiful movie theatre! It’s myself, girlfriend, and her Mother, (Janice’s) favorite movie theatre in Saskatoon and it’s also at a great price! It has a really great movie theatre atmosphere and I hope it’s here for as long as I live! Sincerely,
